The first questions, I suppose, are 1) Who is Diogenes? and 2) Why does he need a coffee shop anyway?

Diogenes, aka Diogenes the Cynic, lived in ancient Greece sometime between 404-323 BC. He was perhaps the most famous Cynic of the times and is often portrayed with a lantern searching for an honest man. See the Wikipedia page on Diogenes here and the Wikipedia page on the philosophy of Cynicism here.

Cynicism is now defined as an attitude of scornful or jaded negativity, especially a general distrust of the integrity or professed motives of others. While that may define a general cynicism, my cynicism is directed at - but not limited to - politicians, people in high governmemt positions generally, beaurocracies of any kind, the main stream media, people with good intentions (remember the road to Hell) and most weight loss programs.

But why a coffee shop? A coffee shop used to be a place to meet with friends and strangers to discuss things that matter in a quiet and safe environment. I recall (yes, I'm that old) having pleasant and informative conversations with good and intelligent people who held sometimes vastly different beliefs from mine about politics, religion and culture (classical or pop) without anyone getting defensive or offended. The difference between then and now, I think, is that in those earlier conversations the goal, on both sides, was to communicate and understand, not to win the argument. It seems that many conversations today are really scorched earth battles between people who do not agree, each side seeking to discredit or destroy anyone who does not agree with them. Not a good environment for real communication and understanding.

My opinions are my own and I hope that any stated here will be received in the sense in which they are offered, not to attack but as an attempt to question, communicate and understand.

I am a white heterosexual Christian male (in some circles aka 'the Enemy'). I have been married to the same woman since 1981 and we have three children and (as of 2024) 4 grandchildren. I do not identify with any political party and see myself as a liberterian conservative. I believe the more laws that get passed, the worse things become. I believe in Judeo-Christian ethics and the traditional definitions of gender and marriage.

So if you are still up for it, grab cup of coffe and have a seat!
